Ethiopian Agricultural Products Exported to Somaliland

Djibouti (HAN) January 17, 2006 - The Somali zone capital's Jijjiga Customs Office disclosed that it has secured over 244 million birr from the agricultural produces exported via Jijjiga to Somaliland. Office Head, Amare Gebremariam, told WIC today that the income was obtained from the export of 8.5 million kilograms of Chat , more than 22,000 live animals and over 353,000 liters of milk during the past six months.

He said the income obtained in the stated period has exceeded that of same period last year by 10 million birr due to increase in the number live animals and amount of milk exported.
The legal trading of live animals and milk with Somaliland is very encouraging, Amare said, adding that contraband is however rife at the South Somalia border.The Head urged the pertinent government bodies to exert efforts to reverse the illegal trading and contribute to the improvement.
